The project “The Archive of the Athens Epidaurus Festival: A Priceless Digital Collection of Sixty-Five Years” focuses on the creation, organization, and enrichment of the Festival’s digital archive, with the aim of preserving, promoting, and further utilizing new digital content through thematic virtual exhibitions and digital applications.
THE PROJECT
The aim of the project was the digitisation and scientific documentation of the archive, as well as the implementation of a series of actions to promote the material to the general public, through a renewed website created specifically for this purpose. These actions include interpretive exhibits, digital exhibitions, a virtual museum, educational web applications and an interactive installation for browsing the Festival’s digital cultural heritage, which is on display on the Festival’s premises.
THE SUBJECT
The project focused on the digitisation and scientific documentation of the archive, as well as the implementation of a series of actions aimed at presenting the material to the general public through a redesigned website created specifically for this purpose. These actions include interpretive exhibits, digital exhibitions, a virtual museum, online educational applications, and an interactive installation for navigating the Festival’s digital cultural heritage, which is presented at the Festival’s premises.
THE DIGITAL ARCHIVE
The digital archive developed through the digitisation process was documented by a specialised team of theatre scholars from the Department of Theatre Studies of the University of the Peloponnese, ensuring the scientific validity and integrity of the information produced. The documentation work was carried out in collaboration with members of the team responsible for the physical archive (selection, evaluation, classification, and coding) at the Festival’s premises.
THE METHODOLOGY
The digitisation methodology takes the following form:
- Ergography: Tabulation, full chronological classification of the Festival’s productions.
- Identities: Listing of artistic productions in fields and metadata.
- Accompanying archival material / Indexing and excerpting: Detailed recording of each document in fields / metadata, classification into general categories, and linking with the relevant production(s).
The setting up of the taxonomic fields followed the guidelines described in SearchCulture.gr. (National Aggregator of Digital Cultural Content in the unified cultural information space developed by the National Documentation Centre of Greece – EKT), while taking into account the specialised requirements of the Athens Epidaurus Festival archive.
