The Archive of the Athens Epidaurus Festival: A priceless Digital Collection of 65 years. Development, organisation, documentation, management, and presentation of digital content from the Athens Epidaurus Festival (1955-2020).

THE PROJECT

VIRTUAL MUSEUM

The Athens Epidaurus Festival has a rich archive with more than 3.500 recorded productions and 4.500 documents that highlight the history of the institution. This extensive collection includes photographs, catalogues, posters, videos, programmes and promotional material that document the dynamic course of the Festival and its rich artistic production.

ICONIC MOMENTS

The application captures the history of the performing arts from 1955 to 2020, with a particular focus on the most defining moments. From the Festival’s first events to the most recent performances, the app offers users the opportunity not only to learn about the history of the institution, but also to discover important performances that marked artistic revolutions and encounters with leading artists and creators from around the world.

THE PRESENCE OF CREATION

The educational application “The Presence of Creation” is an initiative that aims to introduce students aged 11-15 to the world of ancient drama and theatrical creation. Through this application, students can discover the individual elements of an ancient drama performance in the context of the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The app is designed to create an interactive educational experience that combines learning with entertainment.

PERFORMANCE ARCHIVE

This application hosts an excellent online archive of videos of performances of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. It provides users with the opportunity to watch and discover rare and historical moments from the performances of Greece’s largest festival, from the 1950s onwards. The Archive of Digitised Performances offers a unique opportunity for viewers to relive these unforgettable artistic experiences, reviving the magic of theatre and music through the visual and audio documents captured on the digital platform.

VIRTUAL TOUR

The “Virtual Tour” application offers Festival visitors the opportunity to explore in a digital way the historical spaces that host the events of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. From the Odeon of Herodes Atticus to the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus and the Little Theatre of Ancient Epidaurus, users can experience the atmosphere through virtual tours.

THE FESTIVAL ON WIKIPEDIA

In the framework of the project, the collaboration with Wikipedia experts (Wikimedian in Residence) led to the creation of new digital articles and the improvement of the online presence of the Athens Epidaurus Festival. The development of these entries, accompanied by images and rich documentation material, aims to enhance the digital dimension of the Festival, making knowledge about its history and performances more accessible to the global digital community of Wikipedia.

THEMATIC EXHIBITION

The Google Arts & Culture app highlights important performances of the Athens Epidaurus Festival, aiming to promote them internationally. Through the partnership with the renowned Google platform, audiences from all over the world are now able to virtually explore important moments and stories of the Festival.
